Glass Castle is Jeannette Wall’s memoir of growing up in the 60s and 70s. She grew up poor and had a hard home life. Her parents were both unreliable. Her alcoholic father charmed people with lies and became a different person when he drank, becoming violent. Her mother was a dreamer, not watching or taking care of her children. Instead she would paint. Early on in the book Jeannette becomes injured when as a three year old, she is trying to make lunch by cooking hot dogs on the stove.
What I liked about this book is that even though Jeannette has a difficult childhood, she overcomes that and makes something of herself. She does not grow up to be like her parents, and instead overcomes that and becomes successful. It was inspirational to read somebody going thru that and rising above.
